Schedule 4 + Appendix D in Australia

A synthetic 15-amino-acid peptide derived from a protective protein found in human gastric juice. It became one of the most talked-about recovery compounds on the strength of animal studies in tendon, ligament, muscle and gut healing — human trial data remains minimal.

How it works

In animal models BPC-157 appears to promote angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation), upregulate growth factor pathways involved in tissue repair, and protect the gut lining. The precise mechanism in humans has not been established because controlled human studies are largely absent.

What the research shows

The evidence base is dominated by rodent studies, many from a single research group in Croatia. Results in animal tendon, ligament, gastric and nerve injury models are consistently positive, but no adequately powered randomised human trial has been published, so efficacy and safety in people are unproven.

Regulatory status

Australia

The TGA moved BPC-157 into Schedule 4 with an Appendix D listing effective 1 June 2024 — a step beyond ordinary prescription-only status, because Appendix D makes even possession without authority illegal. It is not an approved medicine anywhere — no product containing it is registered on the ARTG.

Worldwide

Not approved by the FDA, EMA or any comparable regulator. Its US compounding status shifted through 2026 — removed from the FDA's Category 2 bulk-substances list in April after its nomination was withdrawn, then recommended 8–6 by the FDA's compounding advisory committee — but it still cannot lawfully be compounded. WADA has prohibited it in sport since 2022.
